The World Wide Web
- The text-based internet was mainly used for e-mail and file transfer
only.
- Very few user-friendly applications existed to attract the novice
user.
- Companies like Prodigy, CompuServe, and America Online took
advantage of the graphical abilities that personal computers
possesed, thus attracting more users to the Internet.
- Gopher
(SEE PHOTOS BELOW)
- This software allowed users to organize their information graphically
with menus rather than having to know the names and
locations of files.
- WAIS
(Wide-Area Information Server)
- A tool allowing users to search for documents containing specific
words.
- The World Wide Web came about from the goal of Internet
users to share a common platform for such activities as FTP, e-mail,
gopher, and WAIS.
