Skunks are best known for spraying

This is a defense mechanism against predators

The glands hold about a tablespoon of methyl mercaptan

With a tablespoon the skunk can spray 5 to 6 times

The spray can reach up to 15 feet

Before spraying the skunk usually hisses and growls

The skunk sprays when it lifts its tail

"The smell of the musk can be detected by humans at the dilution of 5.8*10 -9 mg per cc of air" pg  3

"Skunks are one of the best carriers of rabies.  90% of the wild animals that are infected with rabies are either skunks or foxes." pg 150
