The birds are brown with an array of other different colored feathers dependent upon geographic location. These colors can include black, brown, gray, and white.

There are many variations that ruffed grouse can have in color.  These are usually dependent on the climate.  In the more extreme winter climates they tend to have a gray tent.  Where  the climate is milder the birds usually have a more red tent.

Females are usually smaller than males

The name ruffed came from the feathers that are predominantly on the male that are black color

To determine male from female it usually easiest to measure the tail feathers

If the feathers are over 5 7/8 inches then it is usually a male

If smaller than 5 1/2 inches it is usually a female

(more close examination must be done if it is between these to measurements)
