Text Box:  How would you like to earn four general education laboratory science credits in the beautiful tropics?  If so, consider this fantastic opportunity to spend 16 days studying in Panama.
First we’ll stay at the STRI (Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute) facility in Gamboa, a small town right on the Panama Canal.  While there, we’ll hike the famous Pipeline Road in Soberania National Park (home to one of the world’s top birding sites) to watch parrots, toucans, and other exotic species.  We’ll also spend time on Barro Colorado Island, a nature preserve in the middle of Panama Canal. There we’ll tour the island, and learn about the work of resident researchers.  Before leaving Gamboa, we’ll tour Panama City and experience some of the shopping and dining opportunities offered in this modern, thriving capital.
Next we'll visit Cerro Punta, adjacent to Volcan Baru (an extinct volcano), in the beautiful Panamanian highlands to explore a true rainforest.  The area is also home to many farms, including one dedicated entirely to orchids!  Volcan Baru National Park is home to many unique rainforest species of plants and animals.
Then it’s off to the islands of Bocas del Toro, in the beautiful Caribbean.  We’ll spend a week at the STRI facility on Bocas, snorkeling among the coral reefs, mangrove islands and seagrass beds, exploring beaches, and learning about this wonderful marine habitat.  While there, we'll have plenty of time to explore the island town of Bocas to experience its distinct Caribbean flair.
Panama is world-renowned for its incredible biodiversity: over 900 species of birds, almost 10,000 species of plants, and hundreds of species of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians, all packed into an area smaller than the state of South Carolina.
