ITEC120
hw01i:
Introductions
Due Date: Aug.29 (Tue.), by the start of class.
1
The purpose of this first homework is twofold:
for me to get a better idea of who you are,
and for you to get the hang of the hand-in procedures for this class.
Instructions:
-
Type in answers to each of the following questions, in a computer file
(any text editor will do fine 2).
You can either cut/paste the questions from this file,
or just include the cue-word listed next to the points.
(This provides context for me,
so I don't need to memorize the order of the questions.)
For example:
8. (fave) A favorite band of mine is Bright Eyes.
9. (webCT) Done.
-
Problems worth 0pts don't require an answer.
For problems asking you to do some other task (e.g. ‘post on WebCT’)
you can just say something like ‘done’.
-
Save this file as plain-text, and submit it via WebCT.
[From WebCT, Under the "Course Tools" menu on the left, select "Assignments".
Choose hw01, and then use the "Add attachment" button.]
-
In addition, turn in a hardcopy as you come to class.
All homeworks will work the same way:
submit via WebCT, and turn in a hardcopy in class.
-
(nickname, 1pt) What name do you prefer to go by?
-
(yrs@RU, 1pt) How many years have you completed at Radford?
-
(OC?, 1pt)
Are you living on-campus, or off?
If on-campus, which hall?
-
(major, 1pt) What is your major, and how confident are you of this?
(give a number in [0,1]—so 50% means you're giving even odds
on whether you'll graduate with that as your major).
-
(prior, 1pt)
What prior experience have you had with computers or programming, if any?
-
(desire, 0pts)
Is there some reasonable particular computer program you'd like
to (be able to) write, by the end of this course?
-
(faveCourse, 1pt)
Out of the other courses you are taking this semester,
which one is shaping up to be the most interesting?
-
(fave, 1pt)
Write down a category (in object-oriented terms, a “class,”),
and a most-favorite or least-favorite instance of that class.
(For example:
“My favorite powerpuff girl: Buttercup.”
or
“Class: Musical genres; Least favorite instance: Polka.”)
-
(webCT, 1pt)
Post your previous answer
to the class Discussion Board, in WebCT.
(Okay, you can use a different answer than the previous question, if you want.)
-
(mp3lib, 1pt)
If you own mp3 or similar music files,
what program do you use (if any) to organize
your library and playlists?
-
(learning style, 3pts)
Take the
Index
of Learning Styles Questionnaire.
What are your four scores? (e.g. “ACT 5, INT 2, …”)
(If you prefer to not divulge your scores, you can instead
report how many of your four scores are even.)
-
(0pts)
In WebCT, you'll find a passel of ITEC120 courses listed:
a class and lab (L) entry for your particular section,
plus a class and lab entry for all "Barland (All Sections)" sections.
We will only use the All Sections class,
“ITEC120-Barland (All Sections)”
The other three WebCT entries will just clutter
your WebCT view for the semester,
unless you click on the pencil icon in the upper-right
of your list, and choose to "Hide Link" for other ITEC120 entries.
-
(0pts)
From Chapter 1, read:
pp. 26.6 - 34.8, and 40.2 - 48.0.
(For the first couple of weeks we'll be cherry-picking from sections the book,
so it is particularly important not to miss lectures.
We will likely be reading the remainder of Chapter 1 later on.)
1This first homework will be accepted without late penalty
until Sep.01 (Fri) 23:59, to accomodate students who add the class
during the first two weeks.
But other homeworks will be given out during this time, so heck,
you might as well just get this one over with and submitted
by the due-date!

2You could even use BlueJ's editor,
if you like. back
