Hmmmm.  I think my friend Bert, just might possibly be asleep!  For one
thing, his eyes are closed... hmmm.  And another thing, his arms are all
floppy and soggy like.  Bert's arms aren't floppy and soggy like when he is 
awake.  Let's see. POKE  POKE POKE POKE POKE POKE POKE!!!  When he is awake,
Bert yells at me when I poke him in the tummy.  So I think that ol' buddy
Bert here is definitely asleep.

On the other hand, now his eyes are open.  Bert's eyes are usually open
only when he is awake.  Let's see.  POKE POKE POKE POKE POKE POKE POKE!!

Hey, Ernie, cut that out!

Sorry, Bert, did I wake you up?

You most certainly did!

See.  I was right.  Bert was asleep, and now he is awake.
