Non-Degree and Non-Credit Programs

Certificate in Information Technology

The College of Information Science and Technology has developed the Certificate in Information Technology to meet the standards of persons preparing to teach information technology at the post-baccalaureate level as well as information technology practitioners who want to advance their level of expertise and those who want to change careers and enter the IT field. The Certificate specifically meets the needs of those who already have a master’s degree in another field and want to teach information technology at the undergraduate level. Students must complete 18 hours of information technology coursework to fulfill the requirements of the Certificate. Courses are taught "live" via distance technology. Students may access the classes from their work or home computer or participate in a "classroom setting" at the Higher Education Center in Roanoke and Abingdon.

The Certificate courses include:

ITEC 501 Software Development and Algorithms (3)
ITEC 502 Computer Organization and Operating Systems (3)
ITEC 625 Web Development Systems (3)
ITEC 640 Database Concepts (3)
ITEC 650 Networking Concepts (3)
ITEC 680 Programming Languages (3)

Optional Course:

ITEC 500 Foundations of Computer Science (3)
An additional course, serving as a “leveling course” to prepare students to take the courses in the Certificate, will be required for students who lack the undergraduate prerequisites for the Certificate courses. This course will not count for graduate credit.

Students will be accepted for this certificate beginning fall 2005.
