Traditional Burial Ceremony in Togo Countryside

Woman dancing in grief and honor for the deceased whose picture is on the wall in the background.

All afternoon there were speeches honoring the deceased person who was the Chief of this village.

The culmination of the days events of morning, viewing the dead person dressed in his traditional (Chief's) clothing, and socializing is the burial in which many of the assembled guests accompany the casket out of the village and up the hillside to the burial chamber.

Up the hillside in front of the crowd is the burial chamber for this village with a narrow entrance within which are a number of people who have been buried over the years.   I was not allowed to photograph the actual burial or the chamber.
