Meet Olympia

Manet's (in)famous painting, "Olympia," created quite a stir in its day, chiefly because of its open challenge of the art establishment and its subversion of the male gaze.  In conscious parody of the neoclassical mad Academy, Manet travesties the traditional with his choice of model who was a well-known courtesan/call girl.  In addition, he has her  look directly at the artist/voyeur/collector, that is, at he who would objectify (and thus buy or sell)  her as a piece of art, a thing.  She turns the tables, returns the male gaze, and defies objectification by objectifying the gazer. Of course, this process of reverse objectification is incomplete or at least non-comprehensive as Olympia seems oblivious to the other woman in the frame, the oppressed woman of color who remains a spectacle rather than a spectator. I am in awe of acts of raw defiance such as the locked gaze, and I am troubled by the invisibility of so many among us who are not empowered  to do just that.   A casual blindness to the differences among women marks too much of mainstream discourse about feminism.  Being a feminist today means being aware of how economic class and social mobility, race and ethnicity, sexuality, geographic region, physical health, age,  looks, and religion affects what we need and our ability to procure it. I want to learn how to lock gazes, how to be an agent, how to act rather than appear. I also want to be fully conscious of women's diversity and uniqueness as human beings.  Below are some links that I have found helpful in this quest.  Explore as you will; send suggestions when you can.
