Subject: Passing of Dr. Philip Luck

To the RU Campus Community:

It is my very sad duty to report the death of Dr. Philip A. Luck, Assistant Professor of Sociology.  Although Dr. Luck had only been part of the Highlander family since fall 2006, he had quickly established himself as an exceptional teacher, a respected advisor and mentor for sociology majors, and a very active scholar.  Even though he was in the early stages of his career, he had multiple publications and presentations to his credit, and a book he edited, Conversations in Sociology: Readings and Activities, is scheduled for publication next summer.

Dr. Luck earned his B.A. and M.Ed. from Augusta State University and his Ph.D. from Georgia State University.  He will be sorely missed by his family, his friends, his colleagues, and his students.  The Department of Sociology and Anthropology will celebrate his life and accomplishments at a memorial service to be scheduled at a later date.

RU has lost two beloved faculty, Dr. Luck and Dr. Mel Mattson, within the past few weeks.  The deaths of those for whom we care a great deal frequently generate a range of emotional responses.  Student Counseling Services offers the RU community the attached information about both typical responses to tragedies such as unexpected deaths and reactions that may signal the need for additional counseling support.

Please call Student Counseling Services at 831-5226 if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Dr. Wil Stanton

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
