College Students and Consumer Choices

By: Caroline Stanfill

Abstract: Since the dawn of capitalism, consumers have had choices

about what to buy and where to buy it. The consumer decisions we

make affect the world around us sometimes more than we are aware.

Many people are unaware of the ethics involved in their consumer choices.

I hypothesized that female college students’ consumer choices would

be based more on ethical concerns than male college students’ consumer

choices. To determine the degree to which male and female college

students are aware of and practice ethical consumerism, an online survey

was created and answered by 83 college students at Radford University.

Preliminary testing of the hypothesis suggests that there is no support for

the hypothesis.
