Clay with animated projections
Traditionally artists have explored the technological, sociological, and ideological implications of their age and have
created new ways of perceiving or reflecting upon the human
condition. The purpose of this exhibition is to symbolize the body/mind
dualism in our age by juxtaposing electronic images within vessels of clay.
Vessels not only mean containers, but a means of transportation.
The dualism of body/mind still basic to western philosophy regards our senses
as primitive, superstitious forms of perceiving. Yet we are symbol-making animals.
Our sensual/visual/spatial life can inform the abstract knowledge of the mind.
The apple's fall describes Newton's gravity. A train moving from a station gives
insight to Einstein's theory of relativity. Direct, physical, and sensual interaction
with the great diversity of creation can enhance and inform our understanding
in infinite ways.
Metaphorically clay has personified humankind made flesh (from dust to dust).
It is an ancient means of art making. The human hand, while molding and forming
the clay, exposes the process. Today mass production has freed the clay master to
create more artistic expressions. Even in its most functional form the clay is not just
an object; it defines a space. Space and form, a paradox united, is what is contemplated
in a Zen tea ceremony. By projecting electronic images within the context of clay
vessels we hope to contemplate another paradox contemporary to our age.
