ACADEMIC ADVISING - MISSION STATEMENT

  Academic advising is essential to the well-being of students and provides help in establishing realistic goals and meeting the academic needs of students.

The mission of academic advising in the College of Education and Human Development is to provide academic support to students pursuing their undergraduate degree by providing information and appropriate referrals related to degree programs, career goals, and life goals. This mission is accomplished by offering accurate and timely information on academic requirements, policies and procedures, and career choices. Academic advising is more than just selecting courses and registering for classes; academic advising is vital to student success.

Academic advising is a shared process: the student and the advisor both have responsibilities in order for the advising experience to be of most benefit to the student.

Each student will be assigned an academic advisor who is knowledgeable in program requirements, policies, and career expectations and opportunities. The advisor can talk with students and offer guidance in finding appropriate support depending on the individual student's needs.

The College of Education and Human Development offers programs to prepare individuals to become teachers, sports trainers, early childhood educators, guidance counselors, principals, and professionals in many other careers that serve our communities. These programs are completed by students who are caring, giving individuals, who want to "make a difference" in the lives they touch.

To help satisfy the mission of the College and advising in particular, the Center for Academic Advising and Student Support has been established. The Center offers academic support to students in programs offered by the College and to any student seeking teacher licensure. Students may walk in and ask for assistance, but scheduling an appointment is better for students and advisors. The primary purpose of the center is:

to provide academic advising and academic support for students, act as a referral agent, and provide support to faculty academic advisors.

Students who visit the Center for assistance will find.

  • coherent and consistent academic advising;

  • assistance based on individual needs,

  • answers to questions regarding university policies and procedures, program requirements, program policies, etc.

  • assistance based on situational problems,

  • a resource for information on teacher licensure, and

  • staff who are concerned about student success.

Visit the advising Center and/or a faculty advisor often -- get to know your advisor as a person and get the assistance that you need to be a successful college student.
