Coursework Leading to
Hearing Impairment Licensure

Radford University (RU) is offering coursework leading to licensure in Special Education-Hearing Impairment PreK-12 at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.  RU is the only university in the Commonwealth of Virginia providing this opportunity that is being funded through a Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) State Improvement Grant.  The Department of Special Education and the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders are working collaboratively on this project designed to prepare professionals to serve infants, toddlers, children, and youth who are deaf/hard of hearing.  Participants in this program will have exposure to all communication/instructional approaches used with the deaf/hard of hearing so that methods can be employed based on student need.

Four options are available.

  • Licensure in Hearing Impairment-PreK-12
For unendorsed teachers currently serving as teachers of deaf/hard of hearing students or teachers currently working with deaf/hard of hearing in some capacity who wish to add-on endorsement in hearing impairment  (Grant funding may be available)

For undergraduate students pursuing a college degree and initial teacher licensure in hearing impairment (Scholarship and loan funds are available through the Radford University financial aid office.  Please contact www.radford.edu/~finaid/)

For students pursuing a graduate degree and licensure in hearing impairment (Grant funding is only available for the coursework within the MS leading to licensure and only for professionals currently working with deaf/hard of hearing students.  The remaining coursework for MS completion would be at the student's expense.)

  • In-service Training and Recertification Coursework
For general and special education teachers, administrators, related services personnel, early intervention providers, health care professionals, and others who desire to increase their skills in meeting the needs of infants, toddlers, children, and youth who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing.  (Grant funding is no longer available for this option)
