  Cost and Financial Aid

The experience gained from studying abroad benefits students academically as well as in their careers.  It is a worthwhile investment for now as well as important experience when the time comes to apply for a job in any field in today's global marketplace.

Sometimes students don’t think they can afford to take part in a study abroad program, but it is possible for most students.  The choice to study abroad requires careful thought and budgeting, and the information on this page will help you decide how you might be able to afford such a valuable experience.  You might qualify for the financial aid opportunities described below.

London is an expensive city, but as indicated on the Accommodations page, Dr. Samson has tried to identify ways to hold down the cost of the program.  The information on this page can help you decide whether you can afford to go next year.  The program will enable you to travel, learn, and have fun, but you should also plan to spend wisely.

Financial Aid options for Study Abroad

In order to help you afford a study abroad experience, the University and outside lenders make it possible for your parents or you to take out a loan if you’re enrolled in at least six hours at Radford University.  If your parents meet the eligibility requirements, consider the following options:

 Federal Parent Loan Program

This program helps parents borrow money for your study abroad trip.  Money from these loans isn’t distributed until the beginning of the semester the student is enrolled in.  For more information, go to the RU Financial Aid website at www.radford.edu/~finaid/plus.htm.

Federal Stafford Loans Program

These loans are also distributed only at the beginning of the semester you are enrolled in.  Until the money is distributed, you will need to have other resources to pay the study abroad deposit of $500 on December 3 and $1500 on February 1, 2008.  For more information, go to http://www.radford.edu/~finaid/staf.htm.

Popular Alternatives

Students who want to study abroad can apply for financial aid through Citiassist, Key Alternative, and Emax.  For information about these alternatives, go to www.radford.edu/~finaid/alttab.html.
