Physical Characteristics: The mature height of the white ash ranges from 50 to 80 feet but can reach a height of 100 feet. It is the largest of the ash trees in North America. It is commonly for the white ash to have a spread of 40 to 60 feet. It has a fruit length of 1 to 3 inches. (5) It is a deciduous tree and loses its leaves in the fall. The fall color can be yellow or a purplish color. The leaves on the white ash tree are considered to be compound and opposite and grow 8 to 15 inches long and five to nine leaflets. (6) The leaves on top have a dark green color and on the underneath side have a pale green color. The bark on the tree is a light gray to a grayish brown color and has narrow ridges and diamond shaped fissures. The fruit of the tree is 1 to 1 1/2 inches long and is winged. The seed is located at the base of the canoe shaped fruit and it is dispersed by the wind. (7)
