Raccoon Characteristics
-The raccoon has a white face with a "black mask" around its eyes. It also has seven dark rings on its tail that make it easily recognizable. The raccoon is an amazing climber with its flexible toes that are similar to fingers. (3) The common raccoon is approximately 32 inches long, tail included, and has an average weight of 11 to 18 pounds. In northern areas they weigh somewhat more. They can weigh up to 33 pounds. The largest raccoon ever reported weighed in at over 60 pounds. They have an approximate life span of seven years. The raccoon is omnivorous, they eat a variety of things ranging from nuts and grains to small mammals and amphibians. (4)
Raccoon Habitat
Raccoons are relatively flexible in where they choose to live. There homes are called dens and these dens are usually another animal's home or in barns, hollow trees, under houses, in attics, forks in trees, and many other places they can hide. The raccoon does not build its own den it relies on places that are already constructed. (4)
