inhabited by men of different nationalities, with different
pets, drinks, and cigarettes.

2. The Englishman lives in the red house.

5. The Ukranian drinks tea.

6. The green house is immediately to the right (your right) of
the ivory house.

7. The Old Gold smoker owns the snails.

8. Kools are smoked in the yellow house.

Problem 2

A murder had been committed.  An examination of the fatal 
wound established that the murderer had used a dagger that
made an unusual mark on the body.  There were five suspects:
the doctor, butler, cook, gardener, and accountant.  Each
had been alone in one of the five rooms in the apartment and
thus had no one to vouch for his innocence.  The rooms lie in
a line down a single corridor, in the following order:  
bedroom, den, living room, dining room, and kitchen.  
The additional evidence, gathered from various sources, is:

1. The butler was in the bedroom.

2. The man with the poison was in the room next to the man with
the brown sweater.

3. The man with the dagger wore a gray jacket.

4. The man with the pocketknife wore a black jacket.

5. The cook wore a brown sweater.

6. The gardener was next to the dining room.

7. The man with the poison was in the living room.

8. The man with the pistol was in the room next to the 
man wearing the blue jacket.

9. The gardener had a rope.

10. The doctor was in the room next to the man with the
black jacket.

11. The accountant wore a green sweater.

Problem 3

This test will give some gauge of your mental flexibility
and creativity.  In the many years since the test was 
developed, few people have been able to solve more than 
half the questions on the first try.  Many people reported
answers occurring to them long after the test was set 
aside, particularly at unexpected times when their minds 
were relaxed.  A relatively small number were able to solve
the test in a few days.  No books, no groups, no cheating!!
