DESCRIPTION
The Graduate Teaching Assistanship provides financial support for qualified candidates who wish to pursue further study in the choral art in preparation for professional employment as a conductor. Studies include private applied lessons in conducting, course work in choral literature and historical performance practice. The successful candidate will receive extensive practical experience in conducting and the administrative tasks related to an active choral program.
DUTIES
Direct treble voice madrigal group. Assist the director of choral activities and/or other faculty in conducting another university ensemble. Assist in the production of the annual madrigal dinner. Assist the director of choral activities in administrative tasks related to the maintenance of the choral program including touring.
QUALIFICATIONS
An undergraduate degree in music or music education and the ability to perform in primary applied area at the graduate level required. Keyboard and computer skills preferred.
STIPEND:
Commensurate with experience: $6,000-$8,000 plus the possibility of a waiver of tuition and fees.

THE DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC
The Department of Music awards Bachelors degrees in Music, Music Business, Music Education, Performance, Composition and Music Therapy. Masters degrees are awarded in Music, Music Education and Music Therapy. Located in the Silverman Fine Arts Center, music facilities are air-conditioned and include classrooms, a music education/music therapy laboratory, a class piano laboratory, teaching studios and practice rooms. There are separate rehearsal facilities for instrumental and vocal ensembles as well as individual practice rooms for a pipe organ and a Martin double-manual harpsichord. The Center for Music Technology provides extensive facilities and training in the latest computer and MIDI-based musical techniques. Performance facilities include Porterfield Theatre with 500 seats and Preston Hall which seats 1,500 and is equipped with two Steinway nine-foot concert grand pianos as well as a 50 rank/ four manual Moller pipe organ.
CHORAL MUSIC AT RADFORD UNIVERSITY
Choral ensembles include the Madrigal Singers and Radford Singers, the University Chorus, 40-voice Chorale for treble voices and Camerata, a treble voice madrigal group. Yearly choral activities include the Holiday Madrigal Dinner, regional concert tour and on campus concerts. Every spring the university ensembles combine into the University Choral Union for a performance of a major choral work with instrumental accompaniment. Choral ensembles regularly perform with professional orchestras including the Roanoke Symphony and extended residencies with the Louisiana Philharmonic in New Orleans.
The Director of Choral Activities, David Otis Castonguay, has just been invited to bring Radford Singers to perform at a symposium on American choral music in Ekaterinburgh, Russia. The symposium (October 2000) is sponsored by the Russian Ministry of Culture, the Russian Federation of Choral Conductors and the American Choral Directors. The graduate assistant will have a significant role to play in the planning and operation of the tour.
