This close up picture of the 1996 Happy Isles rockfall source area focuses on one of the several water seeps. One of the areas from which the failed rock mass detached is seen as the lighter colored rock band visible diagonally across the picture.
The loss of one or more “key blocks” (holding up other rock blocks) due to excessive water pressure is the probable triggering mechanism for the 1996 slide.
