Ph.D right after graduation. Mental health job leaves you little personal time and energy.

Obtain a therapy position immediately after you graduate. Expect unfair treatment if you do 

find work at a Community Services Board. Only long standing employees get moved up in rank. 

Always leave a job on good terms. Don't be financially deceived. Private practice-keep in mind 

cost of overhead, health benefits, malpractice insurance, and no guaranteed income for personal 

planning. Work in a city of few therapist. There is joy in mental health work when you take care of 

your own needs, set firm limits, work a steady pace, and never work harder than your clients 

(don't enable)! Keep in touch with your collegeagues for ongoing support and encouragement. The 

state government doesn't care!
