11:50 a.m. This class meets in Powell Hall 101.
Content: Study of extended chromaticism and form
through
the analysis of chorales by J.S. Bach and large-scale works from the Classical era. Examination of texture, timbre, rhythm and tonal motion at various levels.

Examinations: Examinations will follow the format
as
listed:
1. Short definition (20 pts.)
2. Skill evaluation (music writing) (20 pts.)
3. Short analysis (40 pts.)
4. Short essay (20 pts.)
(A total of100 pts.)
Grades: Grades will be based on class
assignments, and examinations given
during the semester. Exam dates are listed in the syllabus. Makeup quizzes will not be given.
Final grades will be based on the following:
1. Chapter assignments (10) 3 pts. (A total of 30 pts.)
2. Beethoven Sonata analysis (10 pts.)
3. Examinations (20-20-20) (A total of 60 pts.)
(A grand total of100 pts.)
Attendance: Regular attendance is expected of
each student.
Absences will not excuse students from assigned due dates. Please discuss planned absences with the
instructor at the earliest possible date.
Computer practice: Students are encouraged to use
the
computer laboratory to practice interval and triad recognition. Music Fun is available for development of interval
recognition. Harmony Fun is available for chordal analysis skills.
