Computer Music Course Descriptions

 
Musc 127 Introduction to Computer Music
This course develops an understanding and appreciation for the use of computers in musical instrument design, music composition and performance in a lab-oriented environment. Introduces students to computer music literature composed since 1950.
 
Musc 128 Computer Music Techniques
Topics include digital sampling, filtering, reverberation and acoustics, frequency modulation, digital recording and editing, computer-assisted composition and performance in a lab-oriented environment. Includes study of computer music literature composed since 1960.
Pre-requisite: Musc 127
 
Musc 227 Computer Music Applications
To promote an understanding of problems and solutions associated with computer music applications in a wide variety of contexts. A survey of available music software focusing on application development. Projects use Opcode's MAX, and Hypercard with multi-media extensions.
 
Musc 373 Computer Music Composition
Original compositions using electronic sound sources are prepared for performance in a concert setting or as a vital component in an audio-visual presentation. Existing works composed for electronic sound sources are surveyed. May be taken again for credit.
Pre-requisites: Musc 127 and Musc 212
 
Musc 428 Computer Music Forum
Allows for intensive work on individual projects in computer music and related research, with class discussion of these and of current developments in the field. Emphasis on composition, performance, application development, and research in psycho-acoustics. Graduate credit requires work at advanced levels. May be taken again for credit.
Pre-requisite: Musc 128
 
Musc 437 Digital Ensemble
Performance of original music using computer music instruments. Typically the ensemble consists of MIDI violin, MIDI mallet percussion, wind and percussion controllers.
 
Musc 492 Computer Music Project
6 hours laboratory After substantial inquiry into a major topic area of computer music, such as multi-media performance, sound synthesis, psycho-acoustics or existing electronic music repertoire, a written document or public performance is prepared.
Pre-requisites: Musc 128, Musc 227, Musc 212
 
Musc 590 Seminar in Musicology
In-depth study and research in a specialized topic chosen from areas such as: acoustics, aesthetics of music, computer music, ethnomusicology, history of theory, jazz, problems of performance practice, works of a major composer, a major composition, group of compositions or genre.
