3:2 Cooperative Engineering Program with Virginia Tech

The Department of Chemistry and Physics at Radford University and the College of Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) offer joint programs in chemistry and chemical engineering, and in physics and engineering. These are dual degree programs in which the student will receive a B.S. in chemistry or physical science (physics option) from Radford University and a B.S. in engineering from Virginia Tech. The approximate time required for a student to complete these programs is five years.

For physics majors, this allows Radford to help foster careers in  Aerospace and Ocean Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and others. For a complete list of Virginia Tech's Engineering disciplines, please consult their College of Engineering website.

Note: A very useful link is the Transfer Equivalency Database from the Virginia Tech Registrar's Transfer Guide page. You can use this database to find out exactly which courses from Radford (or other college) transfer to exactly which Tech classes, or vice versa. This will help you decide, e.g. which Physics classes to take at Tech to finish up your physics major, or which math classes to take here and which ones you might wait to take while at Tech.

Students enrolled in this cooperative program are required to take:

bullet

23 hours of Physics (PHYS 221 and PHYS 222, along with 15 additional hours in Physics)

bullet

8 hours of Chemistry (CHEM 101 and CHEM 102)

bullet

12 hours of Calculus (MATH 151:152:251:252, Calculus I-IV)

bullet

12 hours of elective courses

Incoming students are advised to take the following first-year curriculum at Radford University:

Fall Semester (15 credit hours) Spring Semester (16 credit hours)
  PHYS 221 (4 hours)
  MATH 151 (3)
  CHEM 101 (4)
  ENGL 101 (3)
  UNIV 100 (1)
  PHYS 222 (4 hours)
  MATH 152 (3)
  CHEM 102 (3)
  ENGL 102 (3)
  General Education class (3)

The elective courses are chosen with an advisor and depend on the specific type of engineering the student chooses. For example, students pursuing Electrical Engineering will take additional courses in advanced electromagnetic theory (PHYS 421 and PHYS 422 at Radford) as well as differential equations.

Students in this program are also advised to take the two Engineering Fundamentals courses, EF 1015 and EF 1016, at Virginia Tech in the summer following their freshman year at Radford.

Depending on when the student transfers, the upper-level Physics classes may also be taken while at Tech.

Students in this program will take a total of 36 hours of General Education courses at Radford and at Tech.

After successful completion of this course of study, the student will earn a B.S. in Physical Sciences--Physics Option from Radford University as well as a B. S. in Engineering from Virginia Tech.
