RU chemistry graduates are prepared for successful careers as professional chemists and for advanced academic or professional studies. Almost sixty percent of our chemistry graduates now pursue advanced degrees in a wide range of fields including all the core areas of chemistry (organic, inorganic, analytical, and physical), nuclear chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, and forensic science.
The major provides numerous career options in chemistry ranging from bench chemists at small companies to Ph.D. research and development chemists at large multi-national corporations.The career paths are also diverse, and our graduates are now employed as patent examiners, chemical information specialists, high school teachers, college professors, and pharmaceutical sales representatives.
The chemistry major also provides a natural path for those seeking a doctoral degree in pharmacy as well as professional degrees in medicine and dentistry.To successfully complete the chemistry degree, all majors must take a common core of courses regardless of their career goals. The chemistry curriculum is very demanding and a strong personal work ethic is required. Courses in mathematics, biology and physics are also needed for the program, which leads to a very challenging curriculum. A comprehensive survey of alumni, however, has shown that completion of the RU chemistry degree ensures success in any chemistry related career.
Advising
During the first semester for incoming Chemistry majors or when a student declares a chemistry major, they will be
assigned an advisor by the Department. Students usually meet with their advisor many times during the year to discuss course requirements and individual plans for completing required and elective courses, to discuss career options, and explore research opportunites.
