Mission Statement
       

 

 

The central mission of the Chemistry Program is to prepare students for successful careers as professional chemists and also for advanced academic or professional studies, to graduate students who are good citizens, to provide strong academic support for majors other then chemistry, and to make a significant contribution to the University’s General Education requirement. The Department provides students with high quality instruction, thorough academic and career advising, maximum availability for help outside of class, and the opportunity to participate in undergraduate research. At all levels of instruction, the faculty are firmly committed to maintaining excellence in teaching, collaborative scholarship, and service.

The vision and mission of this student-centered program are driven by these core goals:

  • To instill in each student, a recognition of how the knowledge of chemistry helps to understand the processes of life and human activities.
  • To develop in all students the ability to identify problems, to formulate a solution in a logical manner, and to extend problem solving skills to situations different from any they have previously encountered.
  • To develop sound experimental techniques with concern for maintaining safe working conditions, skills in analyzing experimental data, and the clear presentation of results in various styles of scientific reports.
