Wirgau Elected Chair of the Virginia Blue Ridge Section of the American Chemical Society Assistant professor of chemistry Joseph Wirgau was recently elected chair of the Virginia Blue Ridge Section of the American Chemical Society. As chair, Wirgau will be responsible for the monthly meetings of the section. The one-year term began in January. Wirgau has served the section in previous capacities as Chair-elect and Secretary.
The section serves about one-quarter of Virginia and parts of West Virginia in its mission for the advancement of chemistry and the promotion of chemical research. The section gives awards to outstanding chemistry undergraduate seniors, an outstanding high school teacher and awards at the local science fairs. RU chemistry faculty Cindy Burkhardt and Christine Hermann also have served as members of the section's executive council.
