Naming  Your Picture Files

You  have a disk full of digital pictures, what next?  The next step is naming  your pictures and organizing them, so they are easy to find and use in multimedia projects.

1. Turn on your computer.
2. Remove your diskette from the camera and place the diskette in the floppy drive of the computer.
3. Double-click the “my computer” icon.

4. Double-click the "a:" drive.
The names of the picuture files will be displayed in a list.  Notice that the names are rather cryptic; --they don't tell you anything about the picutures.

We now need to preview the image files on the disk so that we can give them descriptive names.
5. Double-click one of the files in the list to view the picture.
The selected picture file will be displayed in your computer's default image viewing program.
6. After you decide on a new name for the file, you may close the picture viewing program by clicking the "X" icon in the uppermost right-hand corner of the screen.
You are automatically returned to the list of files on the "a" drive.
7. Using the right-hand mouse button, click on the name of the file that you just previewed.

A drop down menu appears.

Click "Rename".

The file name is now high-lighted to indicate that the name can be edited.
8. Use the keyboard to type a new name for the file. Note: The file name must end with the extension ".jpg"
Repeat this process (steps 5 - 9) until all files are renamed.
Note: As your collection of picture files increases it is a good idea to organize your pictures by thematic folders.
