Naming Your Picture Files |

|
You have a disk full of digital pictures, what next? The next step is naming your pictures and organizing them, so they are easy to find and use in multimedia projects. |

| 1. | Turn on your computer. | |
| 2. | Remove your diskette from the camera and place the diskette in the floppy drive of the computer. | |
| 3. | Double-click the “my computer” icon. |

| 4. | Double-click the "a:" drive. | ![]() |
| The names of the picuture files will be displayed in a list. Notice that the names are rather cryptic; --they don't tell you anything about the picutures. | ![]() |

We now need to preview the image files on the disk so that we can give them descriptive names. |

| 5. | Double-click one of the files in the list to view the picture. | |
| The selected picture file will be displayed in your computer's default image viewing program. | ![]() |

| 6. | After you decide on a new name for the file, you may close the picture viewing program by clicking the "X" icon in the uppermost right-hand corner of the screen. | |
| You are automatically returned to the list of files on the "a" drive. | ![]() |

| 7. | Using the right-hand mouse button, click on the
name of the file that you just previewed.
A drop down menu appears. Click "Rename". |

| The file name is now high-lighted to indicate that the name can be edited. | ||
| 8. | Use the keyboard to type a new name for the file. Note: The file name must end with the extension ".jpg" | |
| Repeat this process (steps 5 - 9) until all files are renamed. | ||
| Note: As your collection of picture files increases it is a good idea to organize your pictures by thematic folders. | ||
