Proposed Policy
(1.) The department will develop a formal written policy offering an alternative project to any student who has a moral or religious objection to dissection. The alternative must not require such students to be present while dissections are occurring. (2.) Any student wishing to participate in the alternative method to dissection must first inform their course instructor as outlined in the written policy and in the published curriculum guide. Students may be asked to clarify their objections in writing. (3.) Prior to the beginning of the course, the instructor will provide a viable alternative to the dissection for those students who request one. The alternative project should take an equivalent amount of time and effort as the practical dissection and cover the same amount of material as well as meet the course requirements. (4.) It is expected that students using the alternative methods will be tested on the same material as long as the test given to these students does not include participating in or observing a practical dissection. (5.) Instructors may not discriminate against, penalize, or call into question the moral or religious beliefs of any student for choosing the alternative project over the dissection. |
