ESHE 358 Procedures and Projects – Spring 2012

Goal of this course:

Upon completion of course students shall be computer and technology literate.

Thus; students shall demonstrate an understanding of systems, their uses, basic knowledge and related skills.  To accomplish this; students will attend lecture and lab classes; submit projects to accumulate points (100) and/or a selected combination thereof.  Students have the opportunity to elect how they will complete the class requirements.

Please note:  The tendency for many students enrolled in this class is to try to do the projects that are the “quick and easy path” to earn a grade of A.  It is important to note that the design of the course is to enable those enrolled to assess their current abilities, estimate what they could need based on their intended career path and learn those skills which will be needed.  Students who might not be sure of their future needs should schedule an appointment with the instructor to discuss and develop a personal learning plan.

All students registered for this class must attend the orientation lecture which is the first class meeting.  If this is missed, the student must arrange to meet with the instructor.  Failure to do this will result in the student being dropped from the class.

This course offers three options:

1.      Attend all seven lectures and submit projects to increase your point total to obtain the grade you desire.  (Thus, you would have 70 points from lectures + security training at 15 and the Facebook at 10 = 95 total and an A for your final grade.)

2.      Attend some of the lecture and submit projects to reach your desired point total.  The condition with this option is that whatever lecture you miss, you must submit at least one project from that category. (Thus, if you attend all but Excel lecture; you would have 60 points.  You must do at least one project from Excel category just to get a C.  Other projects may then be submitted from any category to increase your point total to you desired level.)

3.      Attend none of the lectures and submit projects to obtain your points.  The condition for this option is you must submit at least one project from each of the seven required categories.

The projects listed total over 200 points and students may submit those for credit as they chose, based on the stated guidelines. (Note the limitation on submitting all at the end of the semester.)

Submission limitation:

·         All projects must be submitted in digital format:  via D2L mail or RU e-mail

·         Regular RU e-mail is used for all conventional correspondence by the instructor. Thus, if projects are sent using this means, the course number 358 MUST appear in the subject line with the title of the project.  If the project you are submitting is included in more than one category, please indicate where you would like the points applied.

·         Projects are to be submitted weekly and are NOT to be left until the end of the semester. (This is a practical problem of grading-- since there can be over 300 projects to evaluate for the 25+ students enrolled.)

·         Items and/or projects not includes may be requested for credit.  However, this must be done in advance of submission and the specifics are be agreed upon by both the instructor and the student.
