HLTH 410 Drivers Education Theory

This class can be offered to other locations using the distance education format, and when that is done, changes may be necessary.  

Purpose:
This course is intended to develop a thorough understanding of the highway transportation systems, the driving task, traffic problems, factors contributing to the performance of highway users and knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for competence. It will also provide the foundation for the prospective teacher to develop the ability to organize and deliver classroom instruction pertaining to driving and traffic safety.  A significant portion of this course will be devoted to teaching.

Included in the class:
Lectures, group discussion, driver task analysis, practice teaching, written performance evaluations, videos and worksheets will all be used to prepare students to deal with the difficulty task of teaching driving skills. Problem solving skills, teaching method, and instructional skills will be topics of role playing before students are placed in real life situations.  Students must complete all of the online course within the assigned timeframe (see below). 

Topics, information to be included, class requirements and procedures:
This course will include all objectives included in the recommended Driver Education and Foundation of Traffic Safety for the Commonwealth of Virginia.   These requirements, along with the HLTH 412 Behind the Wheel course, must be satisfactorily completed to to obtain the add on endorsement to teach Driver Education in this state.

Used to raise prospective teacher’s comprehension of curriculum content: 
    o
       Students must achieve 90% proficiency on a module test before they can proceed to the next module.   
    o
       Program allows instructor monitor student’s progress

    4-year Colleges or Universities – no charge to student

 Each student will also receive a VADETS Workbook to be completed as they progress through the course

 Attendance:  Required for all.  This is a teaching methods class and observation and interaction are an essential. 

Grading:

Standard A=90%, B=80% etc.  of total points.

Approximant points to be included:

Teaching                             100pts
Attendance                          Mandatory (Must attend all sessions; there are no make-ups.)
Tests                                   100pts
On-line course                     100pts

Class Presentations:
Students will be assigned lessons to be taught in class. Students are expected to thoroughly research their assigned topics and treat this as an actual "teaching situation."  Lesson plans are to be developed and submitted for review.  (Students should refer to the Sample and Blank Format/Style of lesson plans.)  These presentations will be evaluated by class members as well as the instructor.

The Honor Code:
Student Adherence to the honor code is required for this and all RU academic Activities.
