Sample Lesson Plan for Throwing & Catching

Lesson Content: 4th Grade       Lesson # 6 of 10.

Virginia SOLs: 4.1 Skilled Movement and 4.2Movement Concepts

4.1 The student will refine movement skills and demonstrate the ability to combine them in increasingly             complex movement patterns.

4.2  The student will understand and apply movement concepts and principles in complex motor skills.

NASPE Standards # 1. Skilled Movement and # 2 Movement Concepts and Principles

            1.  A physically educated person demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns   needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

            2.  A physically educated person demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles,     strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.

Student Objective(s): At the end of this lesson, students will have learned to (1) “point finger to target” for accuracy and “step to target” for power when throwing Frisbee, and (2) recognize open space move Frisbee/Football down field.

Material and Equipment Needed: 20 Cones, 12 Frisbees, 12 Footballs, pencils and exit slips.

Task 1: When I say go (WISG)…begin T&C the Frisbee back & fourth roughly 10-12 feet apart.

“How can you guarantee it flies to your partner?”

Use Cones to Make

Task 2: WISG…trying to hit their hands targeted at different levels (low, medium, high)

“Point Finger to Target”

Task 3: WISG… trying to hit their hands targeted at different directions (right, left)

·         Return the throw with whatever hand you catch it with (non-dominant, too)!!

Task 4: WISG…start close together, then take one step back with each successful T&C

“How throw far to partner?”

Partner Grid

Task 5: WISG…try to get as far apart as possible, but throw directly to partner

Task 5: (continued)

Challenge 1 = “spell out your name with each successful catch being a letter”

Challenge 2 = “I am going to play music for 30 seconds, see how many catches you can get!”

Challenge 3 = “Standing roughly 15 paces from your partner, give yourself a point for each successful ‘round-trip’ catch…and play to 10.”

Task 7: WISG…have catcher move like FB receiver and throw pass

·         Run in different pathways (straight, curved, zig-zag)

Task 8: WISG…diagram and try 3 FB plays (quick post, comeback, post corner, etc.)

·         Teacher demonstrates patterns

Switch QB after 3 throws

Task 9: WISG…combine a couple partners (n=4) and place defender trying 2-3 throws with same defender starting at line of scrimmage

Switch Defender to QB; to first Receiver; to Defender

Task 10: WISG…have groups of 6 play 3v3 FB Frisbee with no rusher but defenders

Switch after 4 plays

Make “field” across general space

Task 11: WISG…have groups of 6 play keep-away with (3v3)

“Rule of Two’s”

4. Game Play/Sport Activities: WISG…let’s play a couple larger games of Ultimate Frisbee Football with the rule that at least 4 players have to touch the Frisbee/Football to get a point.

·         Play to 5 points, then will switch teams.
