Driver Education Endorsement
8VAC20-22-330. Driver education (add-on endorsement)
ENDORSEMENT REQUIREMENTS.
The candidate must have:
1. Completed an approved teacher preparation program in driver education; or
2. Completed 6 semester hours of coursework distributed in the following areas:
· Driver Task Analysis: 3 semester hours; and
· Principles and methodologies of classroom and in-car instruction, including a minimum of 14 hours of actual behind-the-wheel supervised teaching experience and 2 hours of basic evasive maneuvers: 3 semester hours.
Foundations of Traffic Safety/Driver Tasks Analysis
Catalog Description: Foundations of Traffic Safety is the first of two courses required by the Virginia Department of Education teacher licensure to add an endorsement in driver education to the Virginia teaching license. Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the highway transportation system, the complexity of the driving task, factors contributing to the performance of highway users, and attitudes and skills necessary to develop competent drivers. It will also provide pre-service teachers with the essential knowledge and skills to effectively deliver the course content as presented in the Administrative and Curriculum Guide for Driver Education in Virginia and the VADETS Online Driver Education Course.
Prerequisite: Valid driver’s license
Course Objectives:
After successful completion of this course, the pre-service teacher will be able to:
o licensing responsibilities
o highway transportation system components
o basic operating tasks
o basic maneuvering techniques
o information processing and decision making tasks (sequences)
o time, space & visibility needs of the vehicle and the driver
o risk assessment, risk acceptance, risk compensation, and risk reduction
o influence of personal factors on driver performance
o adverse driving conditions,
o vehicle functions
o consumer needs
VADETS Online Driver Education Course (www.vadriveredu.org)
Class Presentation:
In order to demonstrate the ability to successfully deliver the content in the Curriculum Guide for Driver Education in Virginia, pre-service teachers will be assigned topics to be presented in class. Before starting this teaching assignment, they will submit a copy of the lesson plan. Pre-service teachers are expected to thoroughly research their assigned topics and treat this assignment as an actual student teaching situation.

Incorporating VADETS On-Line Course
· To insure pre-service teacher’s comprehension of curriculum content, all students will complete the VADETS online driver education course.
o Students must achieve 85% proficiency on module quizzes and tests before they can proceed to the next module.
o Students must complete a workbook.
o The program allows the course instructor to monitor pre-service students’ progress
· If students complete the VADETS online course as an outside activity, it may be used in lieu of 12 – 14 classroom contact hours of instruction (with permission of the institution).
· The VADETS online course should not be used to “teach the curriculum content” to the pre-service teachers. Rather, it should enhance the classroom learning activities.
· Pre-service teachers must be assigned a timeline to complete each module and classroom activities should reflect this timeline.

Catalogue Description: Principles and Methodologies of Classroom and In-Car Instruction is the second of two courses required by the Commonwealth of Virginia teacher licensure to add driver education to a Virginia teaching license. This course provides students with an overview of teaching methods and effective practices for driver education instruction. Emphasis is placed on program organization and administration, classroom instruction, single car instruction, multiple-car range instruction, simulation and evaluation. Focus is also placed on teaching skills. The course includes a minimum of 14 hours of behind-the-wheel supervised teaching experiences.

This course is both a laboratory and a lecture course. The scope & sequence has been divided into classroom activities and in-car activities. It is not intended that all classroom must be completed before the laboratory phase begins. The in-car activities should be interspersed with the classroom activities at appropriate times.
