Flautus Aeterna is written for a Yamaha WX11 wind controller, Macintosh computer and synthesizer. As with traditional concerti, this work poses the soloist against a plethora of forces, in this case, performed by the computer. Though the soloist begins the piece without complication, the computer's part intensifies, causing the performer to become nearly lost in the fray. Ultimately the soloist "wins" and the computer beast is held at bay once again. In this piece, the performer plays a written score, the computer follows along, makes musical decisions, and performs its own accompaniment in real-time.
