Thoughts on Ireland

Ireland is one of the most gorgeous places I have ever seen.  It is so green.  And the landscape is speckled with ruins of castles and towers, monasteries, not to mention the cute stone walls that keep in the huge number of sheep that also fill the countryside. I loved it from the moment I got there.

Galway is a gorgeous city, right on the ocean and the cobblestone streets are lined with the most colorful shops and buildings that you have every seen.  It is a relatively small city but it is so lively especially at night with everyone walking around the main streets, shopping or going out to the local pubs, which were also very lively.  It is a unique (and quite enjoyable atmosphere).

The real beauty lies not in the cities but in the countryside.  The castles and ruins were some of the most exciting things I saw, of course, I love castles and ruins.  I also enjoyed the fact that the people were so friendly there.

The weather was actually pretty chilly for the most part in Ireland and also prone to bouts of RAIN.  Perfect sweater weather.

Food

Irish food is somewhat similar and still somewhat different than American food.  The traditional Irish breakfast consisted of bacon, sausage, fried eggs, toast, black pudding, grilled tomatoes, hash rounds, and cereal.  The food was much greasier than that of Paris.  Irish food is often very meat and potatoes based.  In fact, the best thing I ate in Ireland was a beef stew with a brown wheat bread.  It was to die for.  Cider is a popular drink and a nice alternative to beer for anyone old enough to drink.

Transportation

Ireland did not have a metro system, but it did not need one.  Walking was the best and easiest way to get around in the cities.  Also, cabs were available in Dublin if needed.  We took the train from Dublin to Galway and that was a nice trip through the countryside.  Of course, buses were also necessary for the day trips.  Here, they drive on the left side of the road, however, in Dublin the street crossings have written on the ground which direction to look for traffic which is very useful to tourists.  Also, instead of Walk and Don't Walk signs, they have the GREEN MAN and RED MAN symbols, which I found very fun.
