Churches & Cathedrals

in Paris

Notre Dame is one of the most well known cathedrals in Paris.  In fact, it is one of the landmark historical and tourist attractions of the city, and why not?  It is a magnificent place, standing majestically in the cradle of the city.  Pope Alexander III laid the first stones in 1163 on the site of a Roman Temple.  Since then it has grown to become the masterpiece it is today with its unique architecture and gorgeous stained glass windows, nothing demonstrates the beauty of Paris better than Notre Dame.

Another magnificent church in the heart of Paris is Sainte-Chapelle.  Built in 1248 by Louis IX to house religious relics, the church maintains its beauty through the magnificent stained glass windows that adorn the upstairs, each one telling a story from the Bible.  Unfortunately, Walmart lost the roll of film with these pictures, but I have one black and white.  Although it does not show the true beauty of the windows, it does show the magnificence of the architecture.

The Basilique du Sacré Coeur also stands as one of Paris' most gorgeous and religious buildings.  Sitting on a hillside, the Church of the Sacred Heart was built between 1875 and 1914. No photographs are permitted inside the Basilique, but the beauty inside makes it impossible to forget.

Although these are not the only churches in Paris, they are among the most beautiful and most visited.  I am sure these buildings were and remain still of great inspiration to many.
