According to a recent Gallup Poll, over 70% of Americans refer to the upcoming season as "Christmas." About 30% call it something like the "Holiday Season." Amidst an attack on most things Christian, Christmas has -- so far -- stood the test of time. It is important to ask if Christmas' success is due to its religious value or commercial aspect. Retailers rely on Christmas shopping to account for a substantial portion of their annual revenue. Poor sales during the holiday season can spell ruin for a business. The problem with commercialized Christmas is that the underlying meaning is often lost. "Christmas" is quite different than "Xmas." Without the religious reference, the holiday becomes a simple gift-giving day. No matter which name one gives it, it is important to respect the integrity of a holiday, just as it is done with Hanukah and Kwanzaa. Unfortunately, there are those in this country who feel it necessary to erase God from public view. A Californian principal has recently banned a teacher from using the Declaration of Independence as a classroom resource. Yes, you heard correct. It is now politically unacceptable to teach the founding of the government in the government-founded institution of public school, because God's name is included in the document. As a side-bar, Thanksgiving often goes by with little mention. Public schools teach young children that Thanksgiving is about the harmony amongst the pilgrims, Native Americans and other settlers. The children make little hats with buckles and dress up as vegetables for first grade pageants. It is a shame that they are not taught the origin and reasoning behind the holiday. In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the national holiday to be called "Thanksgiving" in order to "thank" our "father" for the blessings bestowed upon the nation. It is sad that only a handful of people will ever know that. The founding fathers (not founders) sought to prevent governmental dictation ofreligion. Their aim was not to prevent religion from being practiced. It is strange how the majority can never be discriminated against or be the victim of wrong doing. Laws exist to protect the minority at the cost of the majority and the premise of equal protection. Whether or not you believe this principal should be enrolled in the program to naturalize citizens and teach the underpinnings of the United States or not, there is a line to be drawn and it cannot wait much longer. |

Comments: To quote a song I heard on 101.7 talk radio while Glenn Beck was hosting, "Have a Rama-Hana-Kwanz-Mas, it's the best time of the year, oh good golly, can't offend nobody on Christmas, this year! Oh, no, the Eskimo's need a holiday, we will get back to you, when we think up one for gays! Have a Rama-Hana-Kwanz-Mas, it's the best time of the year... Oh good golly, can't offend nobody on Christmas, this year!"... sang to the tune of "Have a holly, jolly, Christmas" or whatever that song is. By the way...
