Ever since my freshmen year at Radford University, there has been one thing that has peeled my nerves like fingernails screeching across a chalk board. I am speaking about my recently discovered pet-peeve: Radford University students wearing Virginia Tech clothing. Perhaps I am being elitist, irrational, insensible and a host of other adjectives that could best describe my current outlook on this phenomenon. I do not get angry at seeing a JMU, UVA or George Mason shirt; I even own a Harvard University t-shirt (my mother is incessant about giving me shirts from colleges she lectures at). I guess it is the fact that Virginia Tech is roughly ten miles away from Radford that incites such a displeasure at the perceived smack in the face I feel when someone walks past me on this campus wearing that school's colors. Some say that people wear that school's colors since Radford does not have a football team. I didn't realize that a college needed a football team to get the respect from its students. We have a basketball team that competes with Tech; we have soccer teams, lacrosse teams, a notable rugby club and other clubs and sporting teams that could use our support. If I went down to Duke or UNC, I wouldn't find people from either university wearing shirts and jerseys from the other. That kind of thing just does not happen. I suppose I can't fully blame Radford students for this lack of loyalty, for Radford has not done much to mobilize the spirit of their students over the years. Perhaps we DO need a football team in order to get students to support their school. In the meantime, I would hope that these students, who are so in love with Virginia Tech that they feel it necessary to wear their maroon shirts and match them with orange skirts and shorts, investigate the possibilities of transferring. After all, it is close enough to Radford that these students could transfer this year and commute. They could join the arrogant, snobby and self-proclaimed "superior" students who attend Virginia Tech - since they themselves cannot support their own school. |
