Thanksgiving Break

Ah yes, my friends, it is that time of year again. Time to watch football, time to stuff your face full of that roasted turkey which took only about 56 billion hours to cook and, of course, time to watch your mom's face light up in horror when she discovers that she forgot to take out the plastic bag full of stuffing embedded deep in the roasted turkey's stomach. One might say this sounds as farfetched as J.Lo. getting married, but this kind of thing happens all the time -- well, maybe only in my house.

Amidst all of this holiday commotion, I am certainly looking forward to Thanksgiving break. Instead of the measly Thursday and Friday off, Radford administration finally decided what a good idea it would be to give students off for the whole week. Yes, finally students will get the chance to go home for a whole week. Of course, like all things too good to be true, there is a catch. This year students must test their endurance and stamina, subjecting themselves to the slave-like conditions we all call "school." Unfortunately, there is NO fall break this year, folks.

Fall break never felt like a break anyway. Only two days off, along with the weekend, does not consist of a restful break. Yes, it's better than nothing, but it is still a pain to travel three hours home only to turn around in three days to travel three hours back to school. Along with traveling, students have to either go to work or have a ton of school work to do. Neither one of these activities is relaxing.

What is relaxing is having the whole week off for Thanksgiving. Many students I have talked to definitely are all for having the week off. This gives them more time to pack, travel home and spend more time with their families. True, not all of us are going to spend the WHOLE week with our family, but just enough to get our fill. Other students like the new schedule, because they can avoid the holiday traffic. They won't have to worry about some SUV tailgating them on I-81 just because they are only going 85 mph. Avoiding the holiday traffic takes away some of the stress of going home. Let's face it; almost all of us has experienced road rage at one point, and how could you not with all those crazy lunatics driving?

So traveling home, more rest and plenty of time to enjoy the family gathering is what's in store this holiday season. I don't know about you all, but not having a fall break has got me beat. I will definitely be taking full advantage of Thanksgiving break by drinking $1 pitchers of Bud Light at the bar...um, I mean helping to feed my Great Aunt Helen her mashed potatoes.

I have a friend that's taking her gen. ed. classes at NRCC; the neighboring community college in Dublin. She said they got a few days off for fall break AND the week off for Thanksgiving.
