Making the Holidays Brighter

With the holidays coming right around the corner, many around Radford are starting to think of others. Like previous years, schools and other businesses all around the New River Valley will be collecting toys and clothing for those families who can't afford to have a real holiday. The difference of this year from previous years is that this year all the toys and clothing will be going to a store made for this project.

With the Pulaski Christmas Store being the main place for the less fortunate to go, this and all Christmas' in the future will be a little brighter. In the past, schools worked on their own and set up angel trees for students and families to donate to a few families. With all of the New River Area coming together, more families will be helped and more children will be helped.

The idea was brought up last January during a meeting of the city's school counselors. The old AEP building was just bought by Kathy and William Denny, who plan on donating the first floor to house the store. The store will be able to help over 100 families, giving every child a piece of clothing and a toy from his/her wish list. It is hoped by those running the project that by next year, adults will also be able to be included and be able to receive some gifts they hoped for.

In order to help those who are hungry, many canned food drives will also be held around the area, with a canned food drive being hosted by RU. From Nov. 14 till Dec. 10, RU will be holding a canned food drive to help feed those in need during this time. Donations will be accepted in Heth Student Center from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
