The Need for Better Critical Thinking

Reasoning and Argument is a class that Radford University students can take to improve their critical thinking skills.

Reasoning and Argument is a class that every Radford University student should take. Most students who register for the class assume that it teaches how to argue(which it also does). However, Reasoning and Argument's main focus is good critical thinking skills. Today, most people have poor critical thinking skills, which is a problem since the United States is one of the most educated and advanced nations in the world. Despite our intellectual climate, poor critical thinking permeates our culture.

It is not unusual for two opposing political candidates to personally attack each other in a political campaign. This sort of argument never carries much weight, because it says nothing about the opponent's ideas. It attacks the person, not the argument. Whenever this sort of argument is used, it makes that person's argument look less credible, because it makes them look like they have nothing intelligent to say. This can be amended with good critical thinking skills, because it allows a person to analyze arguments for validity. This can be crucial when making public policy decisions or other important decisions.

Critical thinking might not be exciting to most students at RU, but it is essential that college graduates have good critical thinking skills.
