The "Fight Club" Philosophy

In the movie "Fight Club", Brad Pitt plays the fictional character Tyler Durden. Tyler Durden says that he thinks little of murder and crime and more about the negative influences of celebrities have on our society. While that is an extreme point-of-view, I think Mr. Durden has a point. Who cares if Jessica Simpson asked if her tuna is "chicken or fish"? The last time I checked, many soldiers and civilians were dying in Iraq, but all that America cares about is Jessica Simpson's dinner.

I was really disgusted that on the "Big in 2003" special Kim Jong-il, the current leader of North Korea, was "nominated". I knew that he would not win, but the nomination itself was sickening and just for cheap laughs. Kim Jong-il is responsible for one of the most brutal dictatorships in the world, including the famine which causing his people to suffer and the nunclear arms program that he is itching to unleash. You might as well have had Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein go against Brittany Spears and Christina Aguilera for best pop music.

We are all guilty of emulating celebrities, but I know that foreign policy is much more responsible and satisfying than whoever Tom Cruise is dating. I only hope that more people take responsibility for their roles in the American and world societies - NOT the "Celebrity Olympus."

On that cheery note, have a wonderful holiday!

Mike, that was an impressive story! I too think that holding celebrities on a pedestal encourages people to mold their opinions based on movies, songs, etc. Fiction is Fiction! Paris Hilton is not intelligent news, yet she's alway's on it. What ever happened to the war in Liberia?????? What ever happened to the changing of the guard at the NYSE????
