Apple released a new 40Bg iPod. Normally that wouldn't be anything special but
this time in concert with the storage bump, the whole UI was redesigned. "UI"
refers to the buttons and the wheel. The software is more or less unchanged,
except ACC (a.k.a. Mp4) decoding, new games such as solitaire and parachute
and On-The-Go play list.
The first thing you'll notice about the new pods is the ultra spiffy new
buttons. Now the play, next, back and menu buttons are on there own, and
they're touch sensitive. These are not the usual type of touch sensitive
buttons. They are "Startrek" style, non-moving, just-touch-it-and-it-works
type buttons. These buttons also light up red and white. When you're done with
all your button pressing needs, they dim back to sleep.
The 30 and 40 gig iPod's new software features are almost as entreating as
watching the buttons fade on and off. In fact, iPod now comes standard with
the most popular piece of software from the PC word: Solitaire! If that's not
enough to keep you entertained, it also has a bounce-the-ball-off-the-brick
game and a parachute game, which is about the opposite of the brick game. The
new pods can also make play lists without being hooked up to a computer, which
is really cool. If you just broke up with your girlfriend and still have a
four hour car ride back home to North Virginia, it could be really useful to
make a hardcore punk play list, one which you might not have thought to make
before you left.
Also it holds up to 40Gb of music! Now it can stuff even more music onto that
huge hard drive because of the new ACC compression codec. ACC is just
a fancy name for what is really the Mp4 codec. However it enables you to encode
files at about half the bit rate of and Mp3 and keeps the same sound quality.
The new iPods are a lot more fun that the old versions, and they can hold four
times more songs and you can organize them On-The-Go.
-- Brice is really jealous that the new 'Pods are bigger
than his Hard Drive.
