The Whim Tech Section is your home for all things that use energy in their activities, or in their production. The Tech Section covers the obvious avenues of computers, electronic games, and the internet. Also covered in the Tech Section are all the physical sciences: biology, chemistry, health care, physics, and astronomy. There's something here for everyone, even the "non-geek," so enjoy!
Early in the days of Palm Pilots, various small
utility applets were developed by straight thinking programmers. These
utilities enhanced the functionality of the device, while taking up
minimal memory. Individually these tools sold well, and it was easily
observed that most users who bought one utility from one developer often
bought another utility from a different software developer. Software
e-tailers started creating package deals where you could buy two or more
at reduced prices. TealPoint saw the need for unifying the
micro-utilities, so they merged with or bought out several Tools
Progammers. TealTools is the result.
Four Seasons. Four "Whim" seasons translates to
two years for most of us. For four Whim Seasons I've served a dual role
at Whim as the "Resident Geek" and as the "Head Geek." If anyone has any
doubts about how fast things move in the technology world, let's take a
moment to reflect over what Whim Tech has evaluated and reviewed in the
last 2 years.
Weird Al had it right. Do it, or get medieval on
someone's hiney. The smart folks at Arcona Magi, including the head guru
Dmitriy "the Ancient One," have done just that. So how did they get
medieval enough to draw the attention of Whim's resident Geek? Click on
through to find out.
The release of the Palm OS 5 devices, along with
their more powerful OMAP processors, has opened the Palm platform for
more complex software and games. While gaming was not the primary
function of Palm devices, there is a growing market for Palm OS games.
After all, who wants to pay attention in class or during a long meeting
when nothing useful is being said?
For the past eight weeks, Whim's resident Trekkie, Shaun Corley, has been exploring the inner workings and real world applications of the fantastic technologies seen in the Star Trek franchise. He has shown you how the warp drive, transporters, phasers and the holodeck work. For the final installment of Future Tech Explained, Shaun turns his attention to sickbay and explores the medical technologies seen in the various episodes of "Star Trek" as well as explore their real world applications (you may be surprised!).
There's always something on the web that makes
you think, "What the hell is that?" Here at Submitted For Your Approval, it's our job to find those things and present a few to you every week from singing kittens to ninja pipe cleaners. We've got it. So taste the yummy weirdness every week with SFYA.
Ask The Geek is Whim's weekly technology help
column where everyday folk ask our resident geek science and technology questions. Now in its fourth season, ATG is your source for sound, experienced advice on what has or might run amuck with you in the technological world. Kevin Martin, the Section Manager, uses his eleven years of modern technology experience (as well as the knowledge and experience of his guru friends) to answer almost all technology-related questions submitted. To get your question answered, see the link inside. Do you think you can stump the geek?
