In a time where the clocks are never moving slow enough,
where is the hope of humanity taking a few minutes to breathe the air around
them? It seems that everyone is just so rushed all of the time, and no one
really takes time to do things slowly anymore. Computers are faster, meals are
quicker, and life moves at the speed of light. Where is the time to relax and
remember the important things that make us naturally happy, such as going on a
hike, hanging out with friends, or just laying down and taking a nap?
Article: I remember when my parents bought a computer that was so
cool because it had a 486 processor inside of it. It could play those big,
bulky floppy disks, and games like "King's Quest," and "Mixed-up Mother Goose"
were the greatest thrills in life. I remember sitting back in Dos and learning
how to write my own batch files and thinking I knew it all about computer
programming at the ripe age of thirteen.
Then our computer died, and we were forced to get a new one, but this time it
came with something called a CD-Rom drive and a program called Windows made by
Microsoft. Sure, it was weird to adjust to at first, but eventually, after a
few more computers, there was this thing called the Šinternet.¼ I remember it
well. It took 5 minutes to load a web page, and you could download a gigantic
21k midi file in about 20 minutes.
Today, my Pentium 4 Dell pisses me off when a web page takes more than a split
second to load onto the screen. Talk about life speeding up! Computers are just
one small example. Look at fast food chains, health technology, or anything
else in life. There is just no time to sit back and relax these days.
Even advertisers are profiting from this sad truth. Those gum commercials that
tell you Šlife is too busy to brush your teeth, so chew our gum,¼ are admitting
that you don”t have time to enjoy life. And any college student knows how
quickly life moves. I know I don”t have time for my five classes, ten projects,
three quizzes per week, two tests per week, three nights of work every week,
and taking the occasional nap once or twice a month. It is getting horrendous,
and I don”t think people are stopping long enough to realize it.
This week, go out and try to do a few things. First of all, pick a day when you
don”t have an early class, and go out with a few friends. Make sure you get
enough sleep, though, because that is important too. Take a nice day on the
weekend if you can spare one, and go for a walk or a hike somewhere. Go out and
play a game of football, or do something with nature, like hug a bunch of trees
and kiss all the flowers, if you like that sort of thing. Be a hippy for a
change; I know you hate them as much as I do, but give it a chance. Don”t let
anyone see you, or you will get made fun of (c”mon, you knew I couldn”t resist
making fun of somebody in this article).
The point is, life is speeding up, but you don”t have to. Try to relax and do
something fun for a change. I have come to realize recently that life is too
fast and too short to be worried and stressed all the time. Take some time to
get to know yourself. It will be good for you!

I think you are right on when you say we do need to take a little time to relax. So many of us are getting stressed out right now. Specially when the end of school is just around the conner. We shouldn't just blame that as part of the reason we don't have time for the things and people that really mean a lot to us. Every single one of us should take the time out of our day to say hi to that special someone, chill with a friend or in Nick's case go hug a tree. When the world seems to be tumbling down at full force instead of stressing out like we have been programed to do over the years, we need to just take a step back and breath.

Hmm...good points, Nick, especially the part about being frustrated with the time to load a webpage. I was planning on taking a break and running through a daisy field this saturday at noon till I realized that I had to finish a Whim article. Talk about irony...just kidding!! Take care...
