I am a freshman here at RU and live on the third floor of Muse.
Recently, our wing”s resident assistant was relieved of his position. Was it
for an alcohol charge? No. Misconduct? I don”t believe so. This unreasonable action was taken after Alan Brymer, a senior who was in his
third semester as a RA, was merely tardy to his assigned duty for the evening.
Let me stop for a minute. In case you are unfamiliar with the campus, Muse is
the 13-floor residence hall, a building that makes the Chrysler Building
look insignificant. Muse Hall has over 25 resident assistants. So,
had someone been in dire need of a RA, they could have surely found another RA,
possibly on the same hall.
Am I writing this letter just to cause a commotion or simply to be a nuisance?
No. I am writing this letter as a student who lost not only his RA, but his
friend. Alan promoted a sense of community on our floor, holding many meetings
and coordinating many activities that our entire floor could participate in.
As I mentioned, Alan was more than a student with the responsibility of
overseeing Muse 3A. He was our friend, our leader, and our peer.
When our floor learned of Alan”s misfortune, we all were distraught and in
disbelief. A petition was created and signed by all 28 residents of
Muse 3A. In addition, many of us wrote letters of appeal. However, all our
efforts were cast aside and the office of Residential Life ignored our pleas to reinstate Alan. Alan is a
responsible, well-respected individual whom I have summoned advice from on
many occasions. I feel as if a great disservice has been committed toward us, and I believe that we have been disrespected in
that we were not even given a response. I understand that democracy would be
unreasonable in this situation, but surely respect is not an unreasonable
request.

I agree with Nick. It is definitely a sticky situation, and perhaps Res Life should be a litte more lenient (although I don't know what happened exactly). All in all, great article Jesse. Peace.

It is rough when something like this happens. There is a tear between rules and policies, and the better judgement of everyone who knows that person. Resident Life has to do what their policy book says, and there may be other factors involved that only Residential Life knows about, but it is not my place to intrude on that. Regardless, it would be so much better if the office would listen to students and try to work something out so that we can keep the RA's that are both leaders and friends to us all.
