Did They Promise Money at the End of the Tunnel?

When we graduated high school, we were promised great futures if we went to college. When we got to college, we were told to pick majors that were something that we enjoy, something that could make us happy with ourselves after we graduated. And I did that. Wrong.

I graduated in December. I had already started sending out resumes that professors had preened over time and time again. My resume even includes some pretty impressive writing samples from the internship that I worked so hard to get.

So you ask, "What's the problem?" The problem is an economy that breaks the promises that those nagging high school guidance counselors made. There might not be the great jobs that they promised. In fact, I've found jobs for just about every major except mine. This seems to be the time to be anyone but me. But even the people who aren't me aren't finding jobs!

I'm not completely delusional. I know there are jobs out there, but I never thought that looking for one would be so frustrating. I've tried to keep my head up when I hear, "Sorry, we're just not hiring." They always throw in the clause, "But if anything comes up we'll keep you in mind."

So I'm out panhandling for retail and service jobs, and I keep hearing the same thing.

"Wow, a college grad! And in three and a half years. Aren't you overqualified for this?"

Then, of course, there's the inevitable question-- "Why do you want to work here?" that is every employer asks at every interview on earth. One of these days I'm going to get up the nerve to be truthful, but that's after I have money and don't need a job so badly. I want to tell them that I need money, no matter how I have to get it, and that they are the lucky candidate today who gets to see my smiling face.

Let's face it. Graduating from college leaves most of us with little or no experience for the jobs we want, and too much education for the jobs that will tide us over till we can get real jobs. The post-9/11 economy isn't exactly booming, and as far as I can see, maybe my college degree will best be served serving steaks and chicken to cute young couples who still believe that college is the ticket to their high-paying future.

However, don't bet that I will keep my resume and samples close at hand to snap up that choice opportunity. I might be fresh out into the real world, but I wasn't born yesterday. I know my day will come.

I just thought it was important to tell people about this woman I met online who is sueing the United states for wrongful incarceration. I read her story and after I was done crying I helped her out. What are you doing with that extra ten dollars under your mattress ? Adopting Alexandria: I was searching the internet for one of those pay me a dollar site the other night looking to get some fun and free entertainment when I came across Adopting Alexandria at www.sevensisters.ca. She appeared to be honest enough, a genuine person free of selfish motives and her desire for justice and education where honourable so after some more research on the net I found all of what she said to be true I caved. Since she has given her full name, which tells me she is not embarrassed to be who she is or doing what she is doing so I Adopted her and donated to her cause. I have to have respect for someone who puts their name and face out for a good cause. After all there are no strangers in the world only lots of people we haven't met yet. So why should we get so tied up when they ask for a dollar or two. Not to mention her story is fascinating and the pictures on the site nice. It was worth it. Here is the short version of her site." In 1998 Alexandria Nicole was wrongfully arrested by American Police. She was beaten, striped naked and photographed in an effort to coerce a confession. Detained for another two year, one month and 17 days she now needs your help. Would you consider helping this woman out by viewing more information on the first page of her website. If you are interested please read more and provide what ever assistance you can offer. www.sevensisters.ca "
