As in all professional fields, there is a certain code of ethics that applies. The field of web design is no different. There are several different areas to this code: there are ethics in your work, your interactions and your professionalism in general. I am not referring to basic standard codes such as not stealing, but those codes that specifically relate to your profession. There is no single, or government mandated, code of ethics for web designers, but there are professional organizations and companies that have self-regulated codes that can be referred to. And there are always court cases in the web design field that can be used as scenarios. This information can be found from many sources, but there is one that has most of it combined.

The Online Ethics Center for Engineering and Science has links to individual company and organization code of ethics, information on web-related cases, even syllabi and information on classes offered on web ethics, including one at Virginia Tech. It is important to not just know what is legal and what isn't but also what is right and what is wrong. Look at some of the codes of ethics on this page and try creating your own personal code. This would be a good thing to show in your portfolio or to mention during an interview.
