Anyone who reads Whim with any deal of regularity knows that I am a
major league "Star Trek" fan. I own the first three movies and the first two
season of "The Next Generation" on DVD, and am anxiously counting down the days
until the release of "Deep Space Nine: Season One" boxed set. Whenever I have
a moment or two to spare, I like visiting sites related to Trek. Amongst them
is the official Star Trek
website.
The site, laid out in the LCARS style seen on "Star Trek: The Next
Generation," is extremely easy to navigate, and is broken down into eight
sections: News, Information, Recreation, Library, Community, Shopping, Gaming
and Utilities. The News section is self-explanatory. Here you can find the
latest information on the shows as well as new "Star Trek" products. The
Information section functions as the official "Star Trek" FAQ, while the
Recreation section contains both web-based games, as well as some for your
cellular phone. Be sure to check out the highly addictive ÝNamadra V
Corridor.ÿ
The Library section is the highlight of the site for me. Here you will
find information on the various characters, alien races, ships and actors that
appeared in "Star Trek" over the past 36 years. There¼s also an episode guide
summarizing every episode of "Star Trek." "Star Trek: The Next
Generation," "Deep Space Nine," "Voyager," and "Enterprise" are here; plus you
can view pictures from the episode as well as watch that episode¼s trailer in
QuickTime format. You can find chat rooms in the Community section, and
purchase selected "Trek" products in the Shopping section. The Gaming section
is where you can go to find out about the latest "Star Trek" video games, and
wallpapers and other goodies can be found in the Utilities section.
If I had one complaint about this site, it¼s that they should utilize
more technologies, such as Flash animation. Yet the sheer depth and the
amazing content of this site make this grievance a minor one. There exist
many "Star Trek" sites, many of them quite good, but if it¼s the official word
you¼re looking for, then head to the official Star Trek website.

I never liked Star Trek, but I was into that "Next Generation" when I was younger. My old roommates each bought every season as they were released on DVD, and it was so cool to go back and watch it again. I got to see all the ones I missed and it brought back fun memeories of long ago. I wish I could have all those DVD sets, but every time I see my old roommate's DVD collection now, I just look a tthem and say "My God, man! That is $700 going where my wallet has never been before" and I think how sad I am that money does not grow on trees...
