I do not claim to be a computer genius. However, what I
do know is what works. Through trial and error, I have learned what
every "average Joe" should learn before investing in any computer. I have
learned that the computer industry makes many high quality machines. I have
also learned, however, that some of these so called "computers" can simply end
up as glorified paperweights.
For example, the first computer that my parents ever bought together was a
Compaq. They then bought a series of three Compaqs about a year apart. The
first one started fairly well and seemed to be a nice machine. Suddenly, six
months to a year after buying it, the computer began to freeze or
randomly shut down. It became slow, and one day turned off completely. This
could be confused as a one-in-a-million problem had my parents not then
purchased two more Compaq computers and had exactly the same results.
With each computer, it seems that as the memory was filled little by
little, the computer would have more difficulties. However, somehow I still
ended up receiving a Compaq laptop for my graduation. This computer was the
worst of all (possibly because it was a refurbished computer). I received it
in early January, and by August the touch pad no longer worked and the screen
had a tendency to flicker or just not load. Finally, after giving up on the
idea of this computer and attempting to restore one of my parents crashed
Compaqs, I started some heavy investigating. This is how I arrived at the
decision to consider Dell instead of trying Compaq again.
Dell computers are not only made with some of the best parts, but it
also ended up being remarkably affordable for the quality of computer. The
best part of a Dell I have discovered is the warranty. This warranty
includes repairs to the machine which Dell will come out and do for free if
something should go wrong. Compaq unfortunately has no warranty of that kind
as far as I know. Another thing about Dell computers is that they have already
proven to last longer than Compaq systems. After receiving my Dell in middle-
to-late November, it has almost passed the six month marker. This, in my
experience, is something no Compaq has ever done without at least some flaws.
Therefore, this must mean that the better computers are Dell as opposed to
Compaq. In fact, if one were to consider the statistics of the matter, four
out of four Compaqs crash where one Dell is still good... coincidence? I think
not!

Thanks for the article. I know Compaqs suck and I'm thinking of getting a Dell next. The computer I'm using now was built by me, but I don't know if I wanna put another one together or not. I may just get a Dell.
